ABOUT MAYA

Maya is the daughter of Apham and Janel Nnaji. Her older brother, Zeke also played basketball at the University of Arizona before being drafted by the Denver Nuggets where he currently plays. Her younger sister, Josie, who also plays basketball, is a sophomore in high school.

Maya attended Hopkins High School (Minnetonka, MN) where she excelled both on and off the court. She led her team to win two state championships and graduated Magna Cum Laude in June 2022. Her hard work allowed her to become a Top 10, 5-Star recruit who received scholarship offers from the best programs in the country.

Maya is currently a freshman at the University of Arizona where she plays on the women’s basketball team and is enrolled in the College of Medicine’s APME (Accelerated Pathway to Medical Education) program. As one of five students accepted into Cohort 2, this accelerated medical program will allow her to become a doctor in seven years. “My goal is to make Arizona Women’s Basketball a destination and become a physician. I want to use my talents to help the underserved and am passionate about making a difference in the world.”

Among her many talents, Maya has a beautiful gift of voice – spoken, written, sung. She is a writer, poet, singer, actress, and is fluent in Spanish. As an aspiring professional basketball player and doctor, Maya desires to use her platform in Nigeria (her father’s native country), South America and across the United States.
